Temporomandibular Joint
Temporomandibular Joint disease (TMJ) is a
painful condition affecting the area where the
lower jaw connects to the sides of the skull.
TMJ impairs function and sensation in the face
and jaw, and may spread to the ears, neck, and
shoulders. Symptoms include: facial pain; jaw
joint pain often in combination with neck,
shoulder and back pain; headaches; popping,
grating or clicking sounds with movement of the
jaw; swelling on the side of the face and/or
mouth; a bite that feels uncomfortable; limited
opening or inability to open the mouth
comfortably; deviation of the jaw to one side;
the jaw locking open or closed; swallowing
difficulties; and sometimes ringing in the ears.
YOUR FIRST VISIT
An initial chiropractic
consultation is free. Dr. Shtulman will answer
your questions about chiropractic care, give you
a general overview of what to expect, and
determine whether chiropractic care is the right
care for you.
Later, during your first
formal visit, you’ll complete a health history,
and then have a spinal exams. During the spinal
exam, Dr. Shtulman will perform orthopedic and
neurologic tests, and Chiropractic analysis. A
computerized nervous system scan on the "insight
millennium" is part of the examination.
Spinal x-rays may also be taken at the time of
the initial examination. Why do we do such
a thorough evaluation? Because we don't
want to guess about your health! Dr. Shtulman will study the results of your exam,
then recommend a program of health care for you.
Your free consultation is
about 20 minutes. The first visit with the
examination takes about 60 minutes. Future
visits take just a few minutes depending on your
health goals.

FOLLOW-UP VISITS
On your second visit a review of your results
will be followed by your chiropractic adjustment
which is specific to your area of spinal
subluxations. The doctor will then prescribe
particular exercises, stretches or a series of
things to do and/or avoid in your daily
activities and/or work. A treatment plan will
then be described to you and should be followed
for maximum results.
In case you are curious, Dr. Shtulman’s youngest
patient was 3 days old and the oldest was 96
years old. The smallest patient was 3 lb 10 oz,
the heaviest was 406 lb, and the tallest was
6’8”. If you fall within those parameters there
is an appropriate Chiropractic adjusting
technique for you.
CHIROPRACTIC TECHNIQUES
Manipulation Under
Anesthesia, MUA
For chronic pain sufferers across the United States and Abroad, a simple and painless procedure is offering a level of relief never dreamed possible.
Manipulation of the spine with the patient sedated is one of the gentles and most effective methods of altering chronic conditions. MUA provides manipulation and adjustments of the spine and surrounding tissue in a atmosphere where the patient is more responsive and less apprehensive, therefore eliminating resistance and muscle contracture. -

Diversified
Diversified Technique is the classic
chiropractic technique, developed by D.D.
Palmer, DC. and taught in all chiropractic
colleges. Diversified Technique was refined and
developed by the late Otto Reinert, DC, to
address biomechanical failure in each section of
the spine, as it relates to specific
subluxation. The focus is on restoration to
normal biomechanical function, and correction of
subluxation. In addition, Diversified methods
have been developed to adjust extremity joints,
allowing for beneficial applications in treating
sports injuries and other injuries. Diversified
adjusting of the spine uses specific lines of
drives for all manual thrusts, allowing for
specificity in correcting mechanical distortions
of the spine. X-rays and case histories are used
in analysis and diagnosis. No instruments are
used in the adjusting procedure. Motion
palpatation and full spine, hands-on techniques
are used to deliver a deeper thrust, which makes
an osseous (popping) sound as the adjustment is
given.
Flexion-Distraction
Flexion-Distraction
(also known as Cox Technic), as a marriage of
chiropractic principles with the osteopathic
principles set forth by Alan Stoddard, DO, in
his book, Manual of Osteopathic Technique,
written about the manipulative procedures
developed by John McManis, DO, in the early
1900's. The technique, developed a manipulation
instrument for effective use of the technique,
conducted clinical, as well as participated in
experimental, research; lectured around the
world, and written well-received articles,
chapters for textbooks, and textbooks.
Activator Methods
Activator Methods is based on the postulate that
understanding body mechanics and force is the
key to understanding how to move bones. A leg
test is utilized to tell the doctor if the
subluxation exists, chiefly in the lumbo-sacral
area or cervical region of the spine. With
further research into body mechanics, W.C. Lee
D.C. and A.W. Fuhr D.C. were able to analyze the
body and produce from the analysis consistent
changes using a light non-force specific
chiropractic adjustment. Lee and Fuhr understood
that force was not necessary to correct
subluxations in the body. Two components are
necessary for fast, effective reduction of nerve
pressure caused by subluxations. They are speed
and line of drive. Speed and line of drive are
what make chiropractic the distinct and dynamic
art and science that it is. The activator
instrument was designed to deliver this specific
dynamic thrust. It is a small hand-held gun-type
mechanism that delivers a sharp percussive
thrust upon triggering. The activator instrument
controls the force and speed of the adjustment
exceptionally well and with the activator, the
line of drive can be more specific.
Pierce Stillwagon
Technique
The Pierce-Stillwagon Technique is a
system of analyzing and adjusting the spine that
combines previously understood concepts with a
very simplified, logical and effective procedure
to correct vertebral subluxation complex.
Developed by Dr. Glenn Stillwagon and Dr. Vern
Pierce beginning in 1963, the technique is
practiced by approximately 20% of all
chiropractors. This full spine technique
requires the use of a hi-lo table with drop
pelvic and cervical pads. It uses X-ray
analysis, instrumentation and other physical
findings to eliminate guess-work from case
management. The X-ray analysis and
instrumentation used is Thermography, a
non-invasive, non-contact temperature
measurement technique. Thermographic examination
has resulted in accurate measurement of skin
temperatures of the back, which relate directly
to the effectiveness of the chiropractic
adjustment. Stillwagon Seminars and Technique
use VISI-THERM thermography, which substantiates
the findings of the initial patient examination,
and thereby assists the doctor in assessing the
efficacy of his or her treatment. Studies
demonstrated that a significant percentage of
what were originally considered complaints of
undocumented origin eventually led to diagnosis
of reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), nerve
root irritation, and thoracic outlet syndrome.
For this reason, thermography has been shown to
be of significant value in detecting otherwise
overlooked organic disorders, particularly those
of sympathetic dysfunction that may be diagnosed
as psychogenic in nature. The adjustment is
given by hand, in a high velocity, low force
manner.
Nimmo
Also called the Nimmo Receptor-Tonus
Method, this technique was discovered by Raymond
L. Nimmo, D.C. Seminars on this technique are
now given in most chiropractic colleges. A
normal muscle has normal tonus. Accident,
insult, and injury may cause too many impulses
to fire into the cord producing hypertonus or
hypermyotonia. If this situation exists for a
sufficient time, it can change the position of
bones, producing subluxations, body distortions,
low hips, etc. Later a trigger point may form in
the muscle which sends a barrage of noxious
impulses into an area producing vasoconstriction
with consequent ischemia. Since tonus is
controlled by the sympathetics, and is not under
conscious control, we can not correct our own
distortions. However, it was discovered that
pressure applied in proper degree, at proper
intervals, will release both trigger and
hypermyotonia. Wooden "T-Bars" with rubber tips
are used to reach between ribs and transverse
processes in order to eliminate trigger points
and segmental neuropathy, the latter usually
being referred from viscera. Post adjustment
procedures are used. Palpation is the only means
of diagnoses. X-rays are not used. Most
conditions that are encountered in general
chiropractic practice including neuromuscular
disorders and the cause of practically all pain
can be successfully treated using the Nimmo
technique. Receptor-Tonus relieves most pain
immediately.
Motion Analysis (Palpation)
Motion Analysis was brought to the United States
in 1981 and quickly gained acceptance as a
standard diagnostic tool for the chiropractic
profession. Motion palpation is now taught in
chiropractic colleges throughout the world.
Motion Palpation is a diagnostic technique used
by a doctor of chiropractic to locate joint
dysfunction within the spinal column and
extremities. This method of spinal analysis,
also called Motion Analysis, is based upon the
conclusion that a vertebra cannot be displaced
or remain displaced if some anomaly in the soft
tissues (muscles, ligaments, articular capsule,
etc.) does not cause and perpetuate its
malposition. Therefore a study of the normal and
abnormal mobilities of all the vertebral
articulations and eventually all the extra
spinal points was done to determine whatever
anomalies in motion could be found in relation
to subluxations. Intimate methods of palpating,
and later of measuring motilities, were
developed before and after different
adjustments. Motion Analysis/Palpation was
created as a system of spinal analysis, which
permits an easy examination of the spine, both
in pinpointing the different subluxations and in
determining their types. This system also serves
in determining direction and force of
adjustment. It was found that subluxations can
be classed according to the degree of
restriction of mobility. It was also found that
correction of the fixation usually has a
spontaneous correcting effect on smaller
fixations. Furthermore, when the key fixation in
any series is discovered and corrected, there
was found to be a series of fixations which
usually occurred together and disappeared
together. Medical diagnosis is used to determine
if a subluxation to be adjusted is the site of
any pathology. Clinical diagnosis is also
necessary to determine if a medical specialist
is needed before proceeding with adjustment.
Motion Analysis is a comprehensive diagnosis
that helps the doctor to apply treatment in the
most beneficial way. References:

Massage
Therapy Massage
Therapy is a method of healing that utilizes
human touch to promote relaxation, relief of
tension, and a greater level of well being.
There are numerous methods and techniques of
massage, ranging from the most gentle,
superficial stimulation to deep, forceful
manipulation of muscle groups. Massage is used
as a complement to many other forms of healing.
Massage Therapy promotes healthy circulation,
ease of movement, deep breathing, strong
immunity, and mental clarity. Massage lowers
stress and anxiety levels, reduces blood
pressure, and shortens the healing time of
injuries. Massage is an effective way to
increase the body's receptivity to chiropractic
alignment. Used before an adjustment to warm and
soften tight muscles, and afterward, to
encourage the body to accept and retain the
treatment.
Consider recent clinical research on the
efficacy of massage for pain relief:
-
Massage therapy
is more effective for chronic back pain than
other complementary therapies.
-
Massage therapy
promotes relaxation and alleviates the
perception of pain and anxiety in cancer
patients.
-
Massage
stimulates the brain to produce endorphins.
